How Badly Do We Need to Protect Fenty?

Via the Dupont Current comes news that the D.C. police department needs a zoning variance to place a guard booth outside the Crestwood premises of Mayor Adrian Fenty.

A July 3 hearing of the Board of Zoning Adjustment has been scheduled to take on the issue. The post will enable the cops to continue with the 24-hour security traditionally accorded to D.C. chief execs. (Anthony A. Williams, Fenty's predecessor, didn't need the protection because he lived in a secure building, according to the Current).

Given Fenty's populist bent and his fearlessness with respect to engaging the public, I'd always figured he'd be the one to end the city's ridiculous and costly overprotection of our mayors. I mean, the only one who's really after these guys is Dorothy Brizill, and she does all her work through proper legal channels.
