Ultimate still is a real sport (http://wafc.org) and you can go get tore up after, should the mood strike you. Of course it does take a modicum of athleticism.

(summer reg has passed but you might be able to beg your way onto a rec team)

In my early to mid twenties we played ultimate Frisbee an ramshackle field in North Philly. No league, just chose teams, gym class style. (I was often last but my friends liked me so they sometimes just made me a captain.) Anyway. That was a real sport. Especially when complemented with water ice and Pabst.

WAKA is the mistake you make when you first move to DC, but I have a couple of friends who still play in the league having been here a few years. Whenever I bump into them in their little WAKA t-shirts, they look mortified, as if I caught them strolling out of a porn shop with unmarked bags tucked under their arms. Rightfully so.

And to be honest, the porn-shop scenario would be more dignified.

Some people need a pretense in order to go to a bar and drink. Here's what they're worried about: Conversation version one: Co-worker: "What did you do last night?" Drinker: "I went to a bar and drank beers." "Co-worker: "...Oh." Conversation version two: Co-worker: "What did you do last night?" Drinker: "I played kickball. We totally won! Then we went out for beers." Co-worker: "How wholesome, yet zany!"
