Like Cat Power But Better

I'm a sucker for a good, depressing songstress.

I love Cat Power, but can't tolerate her tantrums. The last time I saw her, she managed to get through maybe a tenth of her set before panicking and departing the stage. On Sunday night, I had the pleasure of seeing a downer of a chanteuse who can actually pull off a full set. Julie Doiron opened up for K Records founder Calvin Johnson (backed on drums by much-missed D.C.er Brett Lyman).

Doiron had an unfakeable, goofy-flighty disposition, rambling about food and travel and minor tidbits in between sets, accidentally surpassing her time limit. And she sang really beautiful songs. Someone should tell Chan Marshall that it really isn't that hard.

Heart And Crime is an excellent album to begin with.

Cat Power actually has cleaned up her act. I saw her last year at the 9:30 club and she sang her beautiful songs and actually had a lot of energy on stage. They say it was because she was sober and her band was backing her up. I was expecting a breakdown but got something completely different. I love her.

I saw her last year, too. In Portland, Ore. She played two sets. Bombed the first -- the one I was at -- and aced the next. So I think she's still unpredictable. You just got lucky.

She might be mostly blotto and depressed but with that come great songwriting skills, I suppose.

cat powers someone I think people are trying to like,
like exotic food that tastes like shit except it "looks cool" have it on your plate, cat powers a mediocre musican, who has maybe 3 or 4 songs that are decent, I just wish her sets were not so dam boring or even embarrassing, if I gonna watch an act self distract on stage it might as well be the Brian jonestown massacre 12 string VOX's B3 ORAGNS TAMBOURINES, & playing the most beautiful music, it might last 2 songs or 6 hours, it's captivating, riveting and something that's missing alot nowadays...REAL
