West of Rock Creek? That's an interesting dividing line, but not a particularly useful one. Try Shaw or Eckington. There are apartments, granted in older buildings, on Mass ave near Dupont for $1000. I'm pretty sure they have full sized 'fridges. If you can't find them, you're not looking hard enough.

Exactly which neighborhoods sport these cheap apartments free of gunshots and helicopters? Even basements in Columbia Heights are over a grand now. And I'm pretty sure you get the helicopters there. I've never seen anything west of Rock Creek Park for less than $1000 (or even $1500 for that matter) that's bigger than a shoebox.

Joe: You do know that you can get "an apartment with a full-sized refrigerator for under $1,000" in DC, don't you? If you like, we'll even throw in a few spotlight-shining 'copters so you'll feel right at home. Though in the 1K range, those are optional.
