The Road to 121 Losses

Tracking the Nats’ historic chase of the ’62 Mets
Current Record: 1-7 (.125, 5.5 GB)
Projected Record: 20-142
Parsing the Loss: The score kinda says it all: Atlanta 8, Washington 0. Two errors, including a dropped popup. Offense seems to merit a look, too.
Barry Svrluga Adjectives of the Day: “startling,” “statistically abysmal”

Svrluga had to use the word “putrid” yesterday, and we’re not even two weeks into the season. The Post is gonna have to let the man swear in print by the all-star break, just to keep him from repeating himself.

The Postie may want to re-read his paper’s coverage of the Orioles’ 0-21 record in ‘88 for new words to describe abject failure.

Had to check. Boswell got some good lines off then. From 4/29/88:
All 24 Baltimore players are in the same foxhole, under fire. Every day, they are in the national spotlight, followed by more cameras and pencils than some pennant winners. They are jokes, clowns, symbols of ineptitude and failure in the clutch. Objects of pity. The President calls to sympathize. If a man in Duluth falls down the basement steps, his wife will probably tell him he’s ready to play for the Orioles.
