Not a Sports-Management Kind of Town

Earlier this week, Forbes released its rankings of general mangers in the four major pro sports leagues. The magazine based its ratings on two factors: how much a team’s improved under a GM’s watch, and how the GM was at controlling costs.

Well, Washington didn’t fare too well:

  • Redskins GM Vinny Cerrato placed 79th out of the 98 GMs ranked, 18th out of 24 in the NFL
  • Nats GM Jim Bowden was 77th overall, 21st out of 23 in the MLB
  • Caps GM George McPhee was 71st overall, 19th out of 25 in the NHL

The one bright spot was Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld, who placed 25th overall, and seventh out of 26. Way to go, Ern.

The question is, of course, who’ll be the first to go. McPhee seems to have the confidence of the Caps ownership, considering the team’s in the midst of a serious, thoughtful rebuilding. Cerrato’s probably OK, too, since he can’t do anything more substantial than buy new tackling dummies without Dan Snyder’s approval. That leaves Bowden. And nobody likes Bowden.
