Also if you took a second to do some research on the show that Matthew Conner is developing you would find that the musical has very little to do with the literal Underground Railroad (there is no Harriet Tubman character.) Anonymous1- your comments are ridiculous. The man came up with the idea so of course he should be the one to develop it. Hopefully you saw the performance today as I did- and found it to be extremely exciting material and so far from what I expected.

To Anon: In all fairness, you'd have to ask African Americans that question. You may find none were interested in a story of that subject matter, may not have thought about it, or simply chose to write on other subject matter. The history of the Underground Railroad touched so many lives and both races. White people (abolitionists, and white republicans) were also the victims of lynchings though most victims of this particular atrocity were black men and women. Please focus on the CONTENT of what is being written, and how this part of American history is being projected across public stages, and when you have seen the end product decide whether or not it warrants being challenged. There's no value added in challenging some guy because he's white or gay because it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure what Matt's being gay has to do with it. I review a lot of straight-themed theater, and I'd be curious to know where you think I miss the boat with that.

As for his being white: You don't think maybe there were a few white folk involved with the Underground Railroad?

I'll be charitable here, and assume that you think you have a point to make. I'm just gonna suggest that you may need to make it a little more clearly if you're gonna convince anybody.

It just kills me that no one has said anything . . . ANYTHING AT ALL. . .about a white, gay man writing a musical about the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. In a city as black as DC, there were no African Americans to work on this story?
