If you want to know what kind of mayor young Adrian Fenty will be, just look at how he led the Committee on Human Services. Under his oversight, many of the District’s neediest citizens — including our youth, the developmentally disabled and the elderly — suffered.

Chairman Fenty oversees many of D.C.’s most troubled agencies, including the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services and the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Administration. Forty kids under the care of DYRS have been killed on D.C. streets within the past 18 months with no response or plan from Fenty; another 144 are in absconder status. DYRS is understaffed, with 18 aftercare workers to deal with 609 committed youth offenders.

Chairman Fenty failed to respond to recommendations from the D.C. Child Fatality Review Committee, which documents problems associated with the deaths of children in the care of the D.C. government. On June 1, former MRDDA Administrator Marsha Thompson cited problems with his oversight of the agency in testimony before the U.S. House Committee on Government Reform.

To date, no action has been taken by Chairman Fenty to address these problems. Since the past is prologue to the future let's just get this straight: if mayor, Fenty will ignore the least of our neighbors with the reckless abandon he has in the past. He either doesn't care or doesn't have the intellectual drive to seek solutions to a clear, and deadly problem.
