Corporate Graffiti Lives

This evening, DCist posts about the latest in D.C. corporate graffiti: Verizon ads on downtown sidewalks.

Back in October, CP reporter Ryan Grim had a story detailing one of the first instances of “guerilla marketing” in Washington: spray-painted sidewalk ads for HBO’s Rome. The upshot: No, HBO didn’t pay the city first. “It’s illegal,” said Bill Rice, spokesperson for the District Department of Transportation.

Back when the olympics were in, I think, Australia, there was a graffiti aritst who worked by *cleaning* his message onto whatever substrate he chose. That is, rather than painting the words or images on, he cleaned them off. It was a good idea. After all, who could issue a citation or fine based on selective cleaning? And it might have the unintended effect of highlighting how dirty sidewalks get. A stencil and a bit of bleach in gel-form is all that would be needed…

NOW ASK THE LEADING WARD 3 CANDIDATE QUESTIONS

Now you can ask the leading DC Ward 3 candidate for city council questions that he may not address on his website.

Over 14,000 voters have visited his website in 6 months.

Get to know Rees! Ask him the questions that mean something to you!

Please don’t allow Rees and his “supporters” to ruin this blog. Take a tip from every listserve and blog in town and ban his spam. And the subsequent revolting “alias” posts that are bound to follow.

    Thank yu.

and if you really want to “get to know Rees” start here:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/columbia_heights/message/3735
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/columbia_heights/message/3664 and the two or three pages of posts following it.

And then have a look at what his “supporters” have been up to on DCpages DC Politics message boards. Shameful.

And google “Jonathan Rees” and “Ward 3″ or Jonathan Rees” and “DC Council.” That should keep you busy for a while.

Also google “JrrRees1955″, but be warned: some of the links are of an adult nature.

Those should give everyone something to ask him about.

Here’s the deal: The guy’s a pain in your ass because you keep responding to him. Ignore him and he will go away. We’d prefer not to have to moderate these comments if we don’t have to.

You’re right, of course. Feel free to remove my two comments above. Seriously.

To some it is spam, to some it is being informed but to me this is America and we still have freedom of speech. Thus if a political candidate wants to post the fact of his candidacy where there is no set rule against it, then let her/him do it as it is not hurting anyone and I can only imagine those opposed would be rival candidates and followers.

City Paper, Rees is hurting no one with his postings and his right to free speech should not be abridge by rivals pretending to be annoyed by it.

Since the above posts are off topic, they should all be deleted.
