2 Cohens @ Blues Alley Wednesday

2007 was a big year for the Israeli siblings Cohen, Avishai and Anat, both jazz musicians. Trumpeter Avishai released one of the most acclaimed records of the year, After the Big Rain. His clarinet- and sax-playing sister Anat put out two celebrated discs, Noir and Poetica, and was one of the headliners of the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival . Each took a turn playing weeklong sellout stands at the Village Vanguard. Both also appeared as side players in umpteen other bands, including Jason Lindner’s big band; (their Live at the Jazz Gallery was my pick for album of the year.) They capped off ‘07 by collaborating - as “The 3 Cohens,” with soprano sax-playing brother Yuval - on the sublime Braid CD.

If you somehow missed out on all of that, you can catch up Wednesday night at Blues Alley. Avishai and Anat will be appearing together, along with the aforementioned Lindner on piano, as the closing act of the Israeli Jazz series cosponsored by the Embassy of Israel’s Cutural Affairs division. As usual, there are two sets, at 8 and 10 pm. Tickets are $20 and going fast.
