Black Plastic Bag: Washington City Paper's Music Blog

Best in Local Music (Part One)

Best Show: No Age at the Hosiery.

Best Protest: Hear Mount Pleasant.

Best Rumor: Fugazi playing Fort Reno. Yeah. They didn’t. But you can still watch them here.

Biggest Surprise: Antelope’s Reflector album. It’s just so smooth.

Best Reunion Show: The Dismemberment Plan benefit show at the Black Cat. To see photos of the show go here.

Best local hip-hop album: Food for AnimalsBelly.

Most Improved: The Apes. They got a great fucking singer and they actually signed to a local label.

Best Venue: The Rock and Roll Hotel. I know this may be a controversial choice. But it’s small, comfortable, and cheap.

Did I get any of these picks all wrong? Do you have a favorite show or album that deserves mention? Fire away.

fugazi….d plan….antelope….really daring, new, innovative choices. This is like DC 101 except for hipsters, it’s 1995 and damn it, it will ALWAYS be 1995. STP is the biggest pop band and Fugazi just rules the underground. pah-theh-tic

Why not suggest your own best of?

I’ve read several folks rave about the Points and Suns of Guns live, but i must confess I have yet to see those punk combos. Dcist and others seem to like indie bands Le Loup and Middle Distance Runner. Georgie James have gotten attention everywhere, but while not bad, I’m not overwhelmed by their 60s inspired pop.

I did see Mambo Sauce, a young DC go-go band, that along with the Critical Condition Band (CCB), got a few pop-r’n'b-go-go songs on local radio. Plus go-go Godfather Chuck Brown had a new cd out and continued to play everywhere. He’s got a new video due to debut very shortly.

I have to suggest the addition of a “best local record label” category, then promptly award it to Gypsy Eyes. A helluva year, they had.

Chuck Brown also made the cover of the D.C. Lotto magazine! I got two copies… one to read, and one to sell!!!
