Downbeat’s No. 1 Rising Star

The Library of Congress calls him “Brilliant. Edgy. Inventive.” I’ve called him his own man, an abstraction-pushing postbopper who is “willing to set aside chops for the sake of a strong composition.” He is New York–based jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, and he’s playing a free show at the Library of Congress this Friday.
