Thank You, Digital Cable
VH1 Crusty or VH1 Catatonic was replaying the 2007 Hip-Hop Honors last night, and only one image is burned into my brain: Busta Rhymes’ fat ol’ belly. Now, I’m not exactly lean. In fact, I’m only a few brownies or gyros away from having a similarly prodigious midsection. But I’m also not a rich rapper who has the resources to hire a professional trainer. So if you’re listening, Busta, please hit the elliptical machine more regularly, or I will continue to track your fatness with untold tenacity.
(I realize it’s been nearly two weeks since VH1 first aired the show, but the network isn’t exactly on-point all the time, either.)

Busta was a bit much, but overall I thought the show was much better than the usual VH1 fare, and a whole lot more palatable than any of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction crap-taculars of the last several years.
The inductees this year were all quite deserving, and the selection of artists to cover the Tribe Called Quest tracks was especially choice–Lupe, Common, Pharrell… In this age of hip hop, where EVERY song always ‘features’ some other mediocre artist I’ve never heard of, I was pretty tickled to see some of my favorite new rap artists alongside my heroes.

Common seemed to have trouble with the pace of the Tribe rhymes. It was a little surprising, but I guess his style is significantly more laid-back than Tip’s is (and it’s definitely more laid-back than Phife’s). Lupe and Pharrell were a lot more natural, to me.
