Take It to the Bridge, Week 1: Maya Freelon Asante

Take it to the Bridge at CorcoranTake It to the Bridge, a joint venture between the Washington Project for the Arts and the Corcoran, begins today with an installation by Maya Freelon Asante. Her installation of tissue paper, assembled like a rough patchwork quilt, consumes the space above the entrance to the building. The tissue paper is a part of Asante's ongoing project titled "Ubuntu"—roughly translated: "I am because we are"—suggesting greater strength in numbers. Her past works have played with tissue paper's translucency, which will play to great effect in the Corcoran's bridge, affecting the sunlight like stained glass. It should be like experiencing two works: the object above, and the light below. Watch a video of the installation.
