Vitamin AOM: Katheryn Trillas’ Monotypes

Indiana Roads

In which our art critics highlight their favorite works on view at Artomatic

In all the chaos, it is easy for something quiet to get lost. Take Kathryn Trillas' monotypes. Tucked away in what amounts to a small hallway on the ninth floor, these tiny black and white images of landscapes could be quickly dismissed as just another set of pretty photos. However, monotypes—as the name suggests—are single runs of an image, not photographs. What's remarkable is their photolike quality and intense detail, created with the artist's tools. No gadgets, no new media, no winks at pop culture or pop art. Just traditional mastery at its best.
