Hamiltonian Gallery Closed After Basement Floods
A water main broke earlier this week on the 1300 block of U Street NW, and, unfortunately, it flooded the basement of Hamiltonian Gallery—where Hamiltonian keeps its art inventory. No word yet on the extent of the damage. The gallery is closed for now, but the current exhibition will reopen January 31, and will be on display through February 4.
Hamiltonian founder Paul So sent the following note to his email list:
We wanted to share the very unfortunate news that a water main break on U Street, NW, has caused flood damage to a few businesses on the 1300 Block, including the basement of Hamiltonian Gallery where we store our art inventory. We have taken immediate action to eliminate water and debris to restore the state of the building. Although we are currently working with an incredible team including art conservators, experts and contractors to asses and mitigate the damage, we're unable to provide specific details at this time. We will provide our artists new information as it becomes available to us.
This has been a painful experience for our team, obviously, but we've also realized something important: our artists, who have suffered to the greatest extent here, have also been the most supportive of us and of each other. We continue to have an outpouring of support which has really proved to us that we're meeting our mission of creating a community that supports art and emerging artists. We feel an immeasurable amount of gratitude to our artists for their poise during this time.
Hamiltonian Gallery will reopen on Tuesday, January 31st. We have extended our current exhibition, including the work of Selin Balci and Ryan Hoover, until Saturday, February 4, 2012. The next exhibition, featuring Matthew Mann and Joyce Yu-Jean Lee, will open on Saturday, February 11, 2012, from 7-9 pm. We hope to see you all then.
The Hamiltonian Fellowship application process remains unaffected and we're looking forward to receiving your submissions.
