Each Labor Day weekend, the Kennedy Center puts new and in-development plays in front of their first audiences at the Page-to-Stage Festival, three days of free readings, workshops, and open rehearsals. This year’s edition, which features 43 local theater companies, is themed around women playwrights—more than 30 have works on the docket, a nearly unheard-of gender ratio for a theater festival—but the topics and styles of the plays run the gamut, from hand jobs and puppetry to golems and operas. Still, a few motifs tie the works together. Do you like politics and bad decisions? Literature and anthropomorphism? Pick a bubble and fill in your schedule accordingly.
