This Week in Theater: The Liar

1271283282_m_theater_16_NEWShakespeare Theatre Company's latest production, The Liar, is the most entertaining production featuring a compulsive womanizer since Tiger Woods' latest press conference. David Ives translated and adapted Pierre Corneille's 17th-century play for STC, and in doing so, enhanced its comic moments with new inventiveness and his signature wordplay. Protagonist Dorante is played believably and charmingly by Christian Conn and is inspiring in his navigation through a web of self-inflicted and tangled lies. The rest of the cast is equally confident under the direction of Michael Kahn, and the verse is as effortless as the stage combat is hilarious. The Liar is one of the better onstage performances the District has recently seen—and that's the truth.
