Virgin Mobile FreeFest Will Happen September 21

Ghanians know it as Founder's Day. Armenians celebrate their independence from the Soviet Union on this day each year. Around the world, it's called International Peace Day. But this year in Columbia, Md., September 21 belongs to an event of greater importance to drunk college kids: Virgin Mobile FreeFest.

Photos: The Fans at FreeFest

Any populist music festival worth its subwoofers will be a showcase for T-shirt slogans and various forms of peacocking, and Saturday's Virgin Mobile FreeFest—with an almost-anything-goes lineup spanning genres and age appeals—certainly complied. While photographer Brandon Wu spent a lot of time capturing what was on stage, he also made sure to document the action on [...]

Virgin Mobile FreeFest: We’re Covering It

The Virgin Mobile FreeFest is like that time you bought a Groupon for Virginia wine-country tasting. Your clique lacks cohesion because it consists of people that back-doored into the deal or have a tenuous connection to the driver. There's goat cheese, wine slushies, and Ben Folds Five.
When you finally get there, you might find that [...]

Plenty of artists would cringe if the word “workmanlike” were used to describe their output, but Jill Townsley embraces it. In an exhibit appropriately titled “TOIL,” Townsley creates her art by painstakingly repeating humble processes like scribbling. That’s not a new idea—artists from Cy Twombly to Linn Meyers have tried it. But Townsley takes to [...]

Rolling In the Deep

Now is a fine time to make money as an electronic-music producer. That’s a fact that hasn’t escaped a few companies in the D.C. area: Since 2010, the local dance-music biz has gone from fledgling to booming. But sacrifices have been made along the way, most of them artistic. In the rush to capitalize on [...]
