Nerds rejoice. (Let’s hope the vinyl skews a little rarer than ’80s Kinks and Wes Montgomery LPs!) I’m sure the record fair is going to be well stocked. On Sunday, the New York Times ran an article about Jim O’Rourke, an underground overachiever who, in addition to recording his own solo music, has played in Sonic Youth and Gastr Del Sol, and worked in various other capacities with Wilco, Joanna Newsom, and Superchunk.

His latest project is the new solo album The Visitor, a recording that, at times, features as many as 200 tracks of instruments.

As one might imagine, an album such as this would require quite an intricate mix, which is perhaps why The Visitor will only be available on CD and vinyl—no digital download.

Here’s part of the Ben Ratliff article from NYT:

He’s taking a stand against the sound quality of MP3s; he’s also taking a stand in favor of artists being able to control the medium and reception of their work.

“You can no longer use context as part of your work,” he said, glumly, “because it doesn’t matter what you do, somebody’s going to change the context of it. The confusion of creativity, making something, with this Internet idea of democratization …” he trailed off, disgusted. “It sounds like old-man stuff, but I think it’s disastrous for the possibilities of any art form.”

He’s not the first artist to attempt a download pushback. But is he a part of the vanguard or a dying breed?

Today we passed on the news that Orpheus Records has officially closed for real. We just got off the phone with Owner Rick Carlisle. Apparently, Carlisle decided to close up shop on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m closed,” Carlisle says. “Saturday was my last day. I didn’t actually decide until two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday. I originally intended to close the previous Saturday….As the day progressed, it just felt right to do it. I alluded to it on the website and a fair number of people were able to read between the lines and were able to come in and wish me well. It just felt right to close.”

Carlisle says he just had enough.

“The people that were coming in just I don’t know,” he says. “It was just a feeling. It felt like it should happen….There were so few people coming in anymore….I figured I’ve gotten rid of a lot of the inventory. I’ve said my goodbyes. My customers said their goodbyes…It didn’t make any sense to keep waiting. I’ve been losing money for three months. I finally had to pull the plug.”

Carlisle goes on to describe the last day of Orpheus. “The last day all the records were for a dollar,” he says. “On Friday night, I spent several hours putting out new stuff just so it wouldn’t be the same boring junk….Two guys did pretty well getting some good stuff. There was still pretty good stuff… I saw a few $30 records go out for a buck.”

Carlisle did take a few things for himself. “The new releases and high end collectibles are leaving with me,” he says. “I’m still getting the new stuff for my regulars. I have an order coming on Thursday–for my diehards. They’ll come and pick up their Steve Earle record. I have someone coming in for the Felice Brothers.”

I finally asked Carlisle what he was gonna do next. “I have no idea,” he admits. “I decided months ago, I have no time to think about that…. For the first three to six months, I’m not going to do anything….I will be keeping the website up for informational purposes if nothing else for the….next 30 years…”

Red Onion just updated its new arrivals list. The stacks now include the new Ganglians self-titled LP. Shop  owner Josh Harkavy endorses the album, writing:

“Sacramento’s Ganglians want an island somewhere where they can soak in the sun and prowl the canopy by night. It’s not often that they do get out, but they can get down for that. Recording sometimes as one, sometimes as four it’s a real game to figure out where the entity comes from and where it’s going. First and foremost it’s about uncertain pleasures.”

Don’t feel like decoding another Woodsist LP? There’s more. Other new arrivals include the new Field LP, new Ducktails LP, and the new Real Estate 7-inch, as well as the new Dischord remasters.

Tomorrow is Record Store Day. Get pumped. Here’s a good idea of what the local stores will be carrying:

The Vinyl District has been partnering with the Industry on this one. We’re just riding shotgun. Here’s a breakdown of what some of the local stores are doing (we will be adding to this list throughout the day):

Crooked Beat:

They will be opening at noon on Saturday. “We’ll have them behind the counter, all on display on the walls. I’m unpacking the Jesus Lizard. It’s unbelievable. Eight seven-inches,” says owner Bill Daly earlier this week. He adds that he has 25 Flaming Lips/Black Lips seven-inches.

Crooked Beat will also have the Sonic Youth/Beck split seven-inch, the Pavement Live LP, and Arthur Russell’s Love is Overtaking Me LP. Etc!

For the first 75 customers, the store will also be giving away goodie bags filled with tons of indie label samplers (Merge, etc.), stickers, posters, buttons, etc. In three of these bags, the store has placed $25 gift certificates.

“We’re getting calls, several a day now,” Daly says. People are mostly calling about the Sonic Youth-Jay Reatard split, the Smiths, the Stooges and MC5 reissue singles.

“It’s kind of nuts. Last year was our busiest day of the year—there was only about nine releases. And this year, it’s over 60,” Daly says. “Ryko said they were sending stuff I don’t know about. Grizzly Bear seven-inches are being included.”

Daly says to expect a huge early crowd. “We are getting phone calls from people who are saying they will be lining up at 8 o’clock in the morning,” he says. “Last year there was 50 people in line as soon as we opened. Everyone was pretty well behaved….I’m just telling people you got to wait in line.”

Red Onion Records and Books:

The store is opening at noon. Owner Josh Harkavy says they will be having a 10-percent-off sale on everything except the Record Store Day releases. He says he’s got a bunch if not the bulk of the special vinyl releases including the Matador stuff and the amazing compilation This LP Crashes Hard Drives which features tracks from Sublime Frequencies, Numero, Honest Jons, etc.

“I’m hoping it’s not too crazy,” Harkavy says. “I’m glad there’s all this interest in Record Stores.”

Som Records:

The 14th Street shop has one thing the other stores do not: Benjy Ferree. The singer-songwriter will be playing at the shop at 7 p.m. We interviewed him recently and admired his latest album. So except a few Washington City Paper employees in attendance!

The store will also be doing a 10-percent-off sale all day long. They’ll have the Domino and Thrill Jockey compilations. K Records has sent them some stuff as well. Also among the stacks will be Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life on 180 gram.

Melody Records:

The store will be opening at 10 a.m. They will have the Wilco DVD. They will have a bunch of vinyl giveaways (samplers) and some limited-edition seven-inches such as Green Day and Jane’s Addiction reissues.

“It’s great to showcase the independent stores,” says indie buyer Heather Horne. “We’re obviously doing something right if we beat out Circuit City. It’s going to keep getting bigger….We’ve gotten tons of calls. Everyone is excited.”

Horne says people have already started coming in to the store thinking it’s already Record Store Day. “We had a group of four or five teenagers come in earlier (today),” she says. “They were like ‘What do you have for Record Store Day?’ We showed them what we have but obviously we can’t give away anything until tomorrow.”

From the Cleveland Park listserv. Writer “Don” begs for vinyl:

“I have decided to go retro in my music listening and am trying to rebuild a collection of good old vinyl record albums. If you’d like to give a loving home to those lonely albums sitting around your house, I’d be happy to take them off your hands. I am mostly looking for rock from the 60’s through 80’s, but would also consider jazz, folk and other popular music.”

Dude needs to hit the used-record bins at Red Onion and Crooked Beat. If he lives in Cleveland Park, I think he could afford their prices.

LOCAL RECORD BLOG MAKES GOOD!

As previously noted, the good people behind Record Store Day 2009 have tapped The Vinyl District to be their flagship blog for this year’s festivities. It’s a commendable move, and seems to have sparked a wave of gratitude over at TVD:

…[It is] an honor for this blog which attempts in a small way to champion the efforts of the brick and mortar record stores and of the medium in general that is: vinyl—to have been designated the blog of record for Record Store Day, 2009.

But it is you, dear reader, to whom we owe a significant debt of gratitude for turning this wee blog, first conceived in pajamas one morning into something the cup of coffee that day never imagined–the blog of record for records. Or something along those lines.

As a thank-you to said “dear reader[s],” TVD is starting eleven (11!!) weeks of vinyl giveaways leading up to the big day on April 18. Check out week one’s Swedish Invasion offerings.
