Arts Roundup: ‘Words Of Wisdom From Nomi Malone and Jessie Spano’ Edition

Morning, readers.
*Elizabeth Berkley plans to write a self-help book to help boost young girls' self-esteem. Presumably it'll skip the whole section about doing a movie where you snort coke, have sex in a pool, and push the lead showgirl down the stairs so you can take her place in a topless Vegas extravaganza. Though hopefully [...]

Local #MusicMonday: New Songs from Casper Bangs, D.C. Don Juan

End your Monday with music from two guys who probably look at themselves in the mirror a lot: Well-dressed indie-popper Casper Bangs, and D.C. Don Juan, whom you probably know through his ode to self-love, "Lookie Looky."
Casper Bangs, the latest project of the Hard Tomorrows' Rob Pierangeli, dropped a new Spirit Animal remix of "Always [...]

Arts Roundup: Oscar Nom Reactions; Lady Gaga Devotion; We Are The World…Again

*Audiences, actors and City Paper have already questioned yesterday's Oscar picks. (Even Best Supporting Actress nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal was shocked by her nomination.) It seems to be one of the few ceremonies this year that isn't a direct repeat of another—the Screen Actors Guild awards were the Golden Globes, part two.  District 9's Best Picture [...]

Arts Roundup: Oscar Noms; Sundance Shrinkage; Ann Powers

Morning, readers.
*Today: Oscar nominations! They're in. Like as not, we'll have a spot of blog commentary from Tricia Olszewski, who's filing dispatches from sunny SoCal. They say it's 70 out there this a.m.; Tricia should maybe bring her editor along next time. just informed me that she canceled her L.A. trip and is, in fact, [...]

Tips for Following Slash on Twitter

Last month, LA Weekly awarded Slash the prestigious "Best MySpace Page" nod at the 2009 L.A. Web Awards. The guitarist's Newscorp home boasts such features as a TurboTax banner ad, an attractive purple and black background, and the compulsory skull-wearing-a-top-hat insignia. In a post this morning, LA Weekly's Erin Broadley speaks with Slash about his [...]

This Week’s Greatest Hits on Arts Desk: Fan Death’s Haterade, D.C. Twitter Trends, Michelle Rhee

This week, haterate spewed everywhere. The dudes behind Fan Death Records aren't impressed with D.C.'s music—and they named names. Check out what they had to say, and the 100-plus comments—angry, amused, confused—that followed:

Twitter Adds Local Trending; D.C. Tweeting Skews Scatological

Looks like Twitter now has local trending. The microblogging site enabled the feature for about 1 percent of its accounts earlier this week; I just saw it for the first time next to my feed. At 8:39 p.m.  tonight, D.C.'s tweeters didn't have anything too serious on their minds—well, except for Haiti:

Arts Roundup: Pondering Lists, Avoiding Bridges, Planning My Vacation

Hello and happy Tweetup day! Last time I checked, it's still December, which is every music critic's favorite month—doubly so this year since the decade is ending. It's true: List-making makes less and less sense as our tastes fragment. That's kinda what Simon Reynolds argues in an essay in the Guardian, which he concludes, I [...]

Tabi Bonney Tweets “Long Lost” Music Video

Nice. Local MC Tabi Bonney just tweeted this previously unreleased video of "Duhh," from his album Dope:

Matador Owner’s Twitter Account Pretty Much Lives Up to Expectations

I met Chris Lombardi once. Back in ’07 I was helping some friends from Australia, who were then signed to Matador, the label he co-founded, get around the United States. When the tour came through New York City the label invited us to stop by the office for a visit. We dropped in for about [...]
