The Only “Washington DC” Band Announced So Far for Next Year’s South by Southwest Is Not, in Fact, a Washington, D.C., Band
Just saying.
On a message board last week, one commenter posted a picture of a smashed Drunkdriver record.
Fan Death Records co-founder Sean Gray came across the rumors last Monday night, accusations he’d encountered before, researched, and cautiously dismissed as hearsay: Did Jeremy Villalobos, the drummer for two of the Maryland label’s bands, have a history of sexual [...]
I don't pretend to understand anything algorithmic, so I can't really vouch for Next Big Sound, whose M.O. is "Music Meets Math." According to its breakdown of South by Southwest, the fourth most buzzed-about artist during the festival was Oddisee, the D.C. beatmaker and member of hip-hop trio Diamond District.
Oddisee's not bragging yet: His blog's [...]
Good morning! We launched a new Web site today, which perhaps you didn't notice since you read my roundups in RSS, thus denying me valuable impressions. (Actually, I have no idea if that's how it works. Someone enlighten me!)
The South by Southwest postmortem! Certainly its own form, not quite a cottage industry. I have been [...]
Good morning! This is the fifth post on this Web site about the death of Alex Chilton. I found out about it last night via Twitter, and an hour later, the influential Big Star leader was beginning to feel overmemorialized. Everybody wants their piece of Chilton's death.
And that, especially in this case, is OK: For [...]
Spinner, AOL's upstart music Web site, approached this year's South by Southwest festival with Texas-sized ambition: It would interview every band and artist performing there—all 2,000 of them.
And so Spinner put out an APB to writers experienced and un-: Give us an interview, we'll give you $50. Don't worry about being familiar with your subject; [...]

For your reference: I live about five miles north of 6th and Red River. That’s South by Southwest ground zero. Up here, it’s all peaceful—birds, parking, lack of vomit in the street. [...]
Good morning! Want to start your day with a mind-fuck? OK!
You can now watch Ramin Bahrani's 2009 short "Plastic Bag" (no relation to this blog's former name) for free, which you most certainly should do, since it stars the voice of Werner Herzog as an emotionally needy plastic bag. Seriously.
Last year, when I interviewed Bahrani—whose [...]
SXSW 2010 (the free stuff): OK, so we know that we’ve been writing a bunch about this thing. But, we figure it’s a big festival—and besides, today’s take isn’t for the official badge-buying set. Nope. We’re bringing back the SXSW talk to tell you about the wide variety of sort-of-associated free shit that goes down [...]
SXSW Music 2010: We here at Festival Watch have, from time to time, strapped on the ole press badge in order to piece together a reported effort. We were serving in that capacity this past Thursday when we found ourselves stumbling onto a bit of SXSW-related news.
Each week, the Austin City Council offers its citizens [...]
