Buildings on All Our Noise

In honor of tonight's Sockets Records showcase, All Our Noise recently hosted a live session for space-punk trio Buildings. The band performed two songs, "Tesselations" (see above) and "Tiny Mountains," which you can find at the AON site.

Sockets Records: The Early Years

On Friday night, Sockets Records will celebrate its fifth anniversary on the mainstage at Black Cat with a five-band bill featuring Hume, Imperial China, Big Gold Belt, Buildings, and the Cornel West Theory. It will be quite the local-music blowout.
But getting to this point took a lot of work. No, really, it took a lot [...]

New Music: Aaron Thompson’s Vals/Bethany Lane/Icarus

This won't seem like high praise to some of you, but the latest EP from Sockets Records' Aaron Thompson gives me serious flashbacks of Ryan Adams—not Ryan Adams the raffish alt-country singer, or Ryan Adams the ill-conceived retro rocker. I'm thinking of the one who sang Love Is Hell, an underappreciated paean to heartbreak and mopey '80 guitar pop. Now, granted, [...]

Clip Job: Five Off-the-Wall Collaborative Performances

There's more to life than gigs.
A handful of area musicians are keeping that notion in mind this weekend, stepping outside their comfort zones for collaborative, one-night-only performances. There's Zomes, the drone-y project of Lungfish's Asa Osborne, which performs tonight at the Writer's Center in Bethesda as part of the ongoing Story/Stereo series. For the performance, [...]

Ruffian Records Posts Rare MP3s, Plans Releases with Sockets

D.C.'s Black Eyes was one of those bands where you ended up collecting every song. The quintet didn't record a lot of them, for one thing—fewer than 30 in the three years it existed. That, and the group's chaotic, genre-hopping, paranoid post-hardcore was—and remains—utterly singular.
You can get a small sense of how that sound emerged at [...]

Sockets Summer Mix Vol. 2

The weather may be cooling off, but Sockets isn't quite ready to pack up the shorts and deflate the beach balls. The label recently posted this mixtape–which includes songs by Food For Animals, BLDGS, and Edie Sedgwick–in the hopes of stretching the summer season out for a few more weeks.

Here's the tracklist:
1. "Love [...]

Free BLDGS Music

The music blog RCRD LBL recently posted a few songs for new Mp3s by D.C.'s own BLDGS (pronounced Buildings). The songs, "For You" and "Now," are drawn from the band's upcoming EP Endless, which should be out on Sockets within the next few weeks. Check them out here.

BLDGS Interview Video

Sockets, the local record label/blog, just posted a interview with BLDGS as well as some live footage of the band performing live at Kansas House. If you didn't believe them when they said they were into wearing Dashikis, well, now you can witness it for yourself.

New Cornel West Theory Mp3

Twinkling rhodes piano. Ambient computer noise. A lightly funky acoustic guitar loop. If you were under the impression that The Cornel West Theory was all about fire and brimstone—a safe assumption, given the ski masks and angry vibes depicted in this video–, well, they can also take it down a notch. “An Angel For You,” [...]
