On Monday, Lyriciss dropped an eight-song EP, The Balance: Respect, on which the New Carrollton native is no longer the underdog. His soundtrack, courtesy of Grussle, J-Scrilla, and Chop-La-Rok, is equally distinctive and subdued, which plays well against Lyriciss' charismatic flow. "Super Bad," with its prevalent squeaks and horns, feels like a theme song to a 1970s crime saga. Conversely, "Stop Scheming," and its hilarious Ray J rant, sounds overtly West Coast.

Respect is the first of four EPs from Lyriciss. Go here to download it. The next project, Money, is scheduled to drop early next year. Below is the official video for "#TheBalance."

From the late '90s to the early aughts, Scrilla's tapes paired veteran MCs with lesser-known talent. "I want my tapes to be more like 'digs' for the listener, rather than a rack of joints they know," Scrilla writes in an email. "This particular series will do that, just with a DMV twist to it."

Now, the leader of the D.C.-based InnerLoop record label has released Capitol Punishment, an ambitious 31-song, 80-minute collection of Scrilla's favorite DMV hip-hop songs from the past year, complete with scratches and shout-outs from the rappers he includes on the project. There are also some exclusives on here, including X.O. and AB The Pro's "How Could You," and 431's "Mona Lisa."

Released today, Punishment mostly dusts off some familiar bangers, like "Blasphemy," an exceptional posse cut featuring Pro'Verb, K-BETA, yU, Lyriciss and RAtheMC, and "Wreck," featuring Kane Mayfield. And the project is properly sequenced: Street-heavy lyrics from Fat Trel and Whitefolkz are paired up, while brainier songs—Oddisee's "I'm From P.G." and Gods'Illa's "Sal's Pizzeria"—are coupled.

Their lyrical cadences and subject matter couldn't be more different. Laelo—a member of the D.C.-based InnerLoop imprint with K-BETA, J-Scrilla and others—discusses addiction and his love of smoking weed, among other things. His album Fuck The World, released yesterday, is a gritty, murderous rampage in which no topic or person is safe, and light-hearted listeners aren't allowed.

PHZ-Sicks, a Woodbridge, Va., native, is more alternative in his approach, fusing live instruments with electronic production, resulting in an expansive hip-hop landscape. His new mixtape, The Laws of PHZ-Sicks, has already gotten some attention from this blog. The project, which dropped today, is breezy at some points and stubbornly persistent at others.

Laelo's album is for sale. PHZ-Sicks' album is free. Happy listening, folks!

The local InnerLoop record label returns with its 23rd edition of the popular "Beatdown" series, which allows local and national producers to display both exclusive and well-known tracks for the audience.

As organizer J-Scrilla explains it, The Beatdown showcase used to be an avenue strictly for local producers to demonstrate their sonic abilities, but that eventually ran its course. The showcase on Sunday will feature 88 Keys, who has crafted beats for Kanye West and Kid Cudi; Bink!, who's worked with Jay-Z and Rick Ross; DJ Spinna, of Pharoahe Monch fame; and Landover's own Kev Brown, a producer for Busta Rhymes and De La Soul.

During the show, each producer will be lined up along the stage and asked to play beats that coincide with certain themes, Scrilla says. For instance, organizers could ask the DJs to rock a beat with a stirring soul sample, then ask them to play a track that could fit in an adult movie. As Scrilla puts it, the themes will depend on the crowd's energy.

The Beatdown, beginning at 10 p.m., will begin with live performances from RA the MC and SM City. The producer showcase is set for 11 p.m. Tickets are $10 now, and $15 at the door. U Street Music Hall is located at 1115A U St. NW.

This week has seen two blindingly colorful DMV rap videos drop. Commonwealth colorways aside, seeing the city so artfully shot in a Vimeo frame is always a good look.
