Good morning! Still recovering from FreeFest? I am! The reviews are starting to pour in: Here's Click Track's. Here are some thoughts from TBD, although the roundup piece by Andrew Beaujon is also a review of, um, me. (Thanks for the kind words!) Here on Arts Desk, we'll have some more coverage today, including tons of shots from Erica Bruce and some video.

BTW: Does the headline of the (otherwise great) WaPo review contain an error, or is "LDC Soundgarden" a joke that went over my head?

Other arts stuff from the Post you should read: Anne Midgette's mixed review of the National Symphony Orchestra opening gala, which was maestro Christoph Eschenbach's debut as music director; Celia Wren's take on the Washington Shakespeare Company's evening of Hamlet and Much Ado about Nothing passages performed in Klingon; the paper's impressive package on Arena Stage's new Mead Center for American Theater, which I've only begun to skim but will dig into later today.

TMOTTGoGo points to a Japanese band covering Chuck Brown:

I had a great time yesterday at Fiesta D.C., although I erroneously decided it was Mount Pleasant Festival and went on to interpret its performers through an indie-rock lens. Then I hit up the D.C. Record Fair at U Street Music Hall and caught DJ sets by John Davis and Tennis System's Matty Taylor. For sure, the venue was busy—you had to wait to browse bins, often—though not nearly as packed as February's fair. I'll have to ask organizers about the total numbers, but by my count, the set-up was capable of accommodating the browsing of around 170 record nerds at a time. These people oughta start a PAC, and make our leaders accountable to the vinyl vote.

The Adams Morgan record store won't be going far—to 2116 18th St. NW from 2318 18th St. NW, according to owner Bill Daly. Crooked Beat's current landlord raised the store's rent recently, and while Daly says business isn't bad, he decided he couldn't afford the increase. He says he should be signing his new lease tomorrow.

When I first asked Daly about the move, he wouldn't reveal the location, and based on one comment he made—“We don’t need the impulse traffic”—I assumed the store would be moving to a side street. But the new location isn't bad: a little further from the center of the neighborhood, sure, but still at a spot that gets plenty of foot traffic.

He says he expects to move in late November, or Dec. 1 at the latest, and that he doesn't anticipate closing the store for more than a day or two while it moves.

In other vinyl news, the next D.C. record fair is set for Sept. 26 at U Street Music Hall. The last two installments of the popular event were at the Black Cat. Organizers haven't announced the guest DJs yet.

Morning everyone. It’s another dreary April May Monday. Hope everyone slept well and no one was rudely awoken at 3:43 a.m. by the sound of a shrieking, dying bird. At least, I hope that’s what it was and not a human.

Last night’s million-hour long Lost series finale was captivating (I skipped Kendra) for someone who hasn’t managed to watch the show in its entirety. I only ever got through the first 8 episodes with my old roommate in college–I had to go to class, he finished the season. I refused to watch it alone–weak heart–so that’s how that story went. Initial reaction when the credits rolled? I don’t get it. So, shit happens, we get feelings for people, nothing’s ever really explained and then we all die. I thought I was watching TV, J. J. Abrams!

Speaking of, the CW’s fall lineup! Life Unexpected (you have to watch it) is coming back! One Tree Hill lives on–think it’s time for grandchildren? And Melrose Place is dead–eh.

Sad news. Husband of deceased actress Brittany Murphy was found dead late Sunday. And as funny as Black people are, Common still cannot act.

But the DC Record Fair looked like a good time, Jesse James is weeping and Kanye is payin' off his bitches.

I thought I'd take it back with this morning's video. Have a good week!

Yesterday's DC Record Fair at the Black Cat turned out to be an overwhelming success, according to one of the event's organizers. "It was pretty crazy," says Neal Becton, Som Records' owner, "like 1500 people turned up. That's one of the reasons we left Comet. We love Comet but it was a little too small. We expected like 500."

The fact that organizers tripled their attendance expectations was not lost on a few record geeks. "A few folks complained about it," Becton says. "There were people lined up at some tables. But everybody was pretty pleased. The dealers were happy."

Becton says that if they hold the record fair at the Black Cat again, they may open up the club's first floor as well. The next record fair may be held in June.

This fair had 30 dealers including notable local shops like Red Onion, Smash, and Crooked Beat as well as Plan 9 from Richmond, Memory Lane from District Heights, and Own Guru from Baltimore. The crowds could have lead to an epic disaster like the one famously chronicled by the Onion.

"From like noon to 5:30 it was like packed with people," says Red Onion's Josh Harkavy. "Everyone's table was like two or three people deep waiting to look at records which is not something I see too often....It was impressive."

Harkavy adds: "I was pretty much blown away at how much merchandise we sold. I think I had four empty crates at the end of the day which is awesome."

Harkavy says his personal highlight was "seeing a baby flip through records. I'd never seen that before."

Becton says: "the DJ sets were great. Kid Congo's set was awesome. Seeing Ian MacKaye up there was kind of fun. He sounded great, playing some pretty rare punk rock singles."

Harkavy and Becton say the fair wasn't just crowded but very diverse for such nerd events. "It's really encouraging," Becton says. "I saw a lot of Xs on hands there. A lot of under 21s buying records, male and female. Most record shows you go to it's a bunch of old guys.... My wife even commented on it. I thought it was kind of nice. It makes for a better atmosphere."

Just a quick reminder that the DC Record Fair hits this Saturday and is shaping up to be the greatest record fair in the history of record fairs. The legendary Chuck Brown will be in the building signing autographs, ten DJs will be rocking separate rooms, food and alcohol will be served, and yours truly will be slanging records and tapes alongside 29 other more qualified dealers. Come through and say hello.
