Soul Set @ Dahlak This Friday

Why did we post this? Because the flyer is super cool and the event is connected to DC Soul Recordings, the best archival resource for local music history. They know their stuff and they know what sounds good. So we trust them enough to promote this event at Dahlak, and even quote the press release straight up:

Celebrate May Day in true soul style! Brian “Midnite Cowboy” Harris has really made a name for himself since busting on the DJ circuit in 1994. This cowboy has turned many a party out from his homestate of North Carolina, to the cold climates of the north. Expect plenty of soul stompers mixed in the with the funk this time around.”

Ten Miles Square kicks off its latest “venture to promote local photographers” at Dahlak on Thursday. The Ethiopian eatery is no stranger to musicians, making the U Street space ideal for “I’m With The Band”–a showing of concert photography by DCers Kyle Gustafson (Washington Post, Toronto Star, Heat Magazine), Nestor Diaz (Rollingstone.com, RVA magazine, Pitchfork.com), and Martin Locraft (DC Magazine, DCist.com, the Onion). DJ Chris Nitti will spin at tomorrow night’s opening reception.

Opening Reception: Thursday, April 9th from 6 p.m.-8p.m. $5 (suggested donation).

Dahlak: 1771 U Street NW, (between Florida Avenue and 17th Street); (202) 332-2110; Sundays-Thursdays, noon-2 a.m.; Fridays-Saturdays, noon-3 a.m.

Future Times Techno-Conciousness Event @ Dahlak

If all you wanted for Christmas was a few hours to cut loose to afro-futurist-house and body music, then I’m guessing that Santa probably stiffed you. Luckily, Future Times has you covered. The DC-based record label will be holding its first ever label event this Saturday night, which will feature live performances by Maximillion Dunbar (Food For Animals) and Rhythm Based Lovers (ex-Manhunter) as well as DJ sets by local rhythm luminaries Beautiful Swimmers, Andrew Morgan, and more.

You might want to test the waters first by checking out Dunbar’s recently posted “Holidaze Mix.”
