Download a New Buildings Song (and Hear Some Other Sockets Goodies)

Next week is big for Sockets Records, a label Arts Desk has praised before: The label is dropping two new LPs, from local groups Imperial China and Buildings, and hosting a showcase on Jan. 28 at the Black Cat. Last week, the label previewed the new records at a listening party at Montserrat House, and now [...]

Arts Roundup: The TV Is Angry Edition

Dept. of Future Releases: Sockets Records tweeted at the world yesterday that two of its bands—noisemakers Imperial China and space-punks Buildings—turned in their albums this week. Both, Imperial China's third album, How We Connect, and Buildings' first LP, should be out next Jan. 28.
Cluster-Eastwood-fuck: TBD's Jenny Rogers landed on the red carpet for last night's Newseum premiere [...]

So Tonight’s Hume Show Should Be Interesting

Hume's summer was probably more blissful than yours. The D.C. band left town at the end of May for a country house on a 100-acre property in the village of Argyle, in Upstate New York. They found it on Craiglist. Apparently the price was reasonable; they quit their day jobs.
"We made great creative strides in a [...]

Weekend Music Roundup: We Are the World Edition

After spending a few weeks down south, I returned to D.C. reminded of how much this city constantly has to offer.  So after quite literally returning from the backwoods to write this weeks' roundup, I felt like I was setting up booths at some high school multi-culti "We Are the World-inspired festival. Granted, not my [...]

Last-Minute Endorsement: Skeleton$, Buildings, and Mirror Gate at the Red Door

It may look like an ominous (or perfect for Halloween—you decide!) bill at first glance, but the three bands Sockets Records has lined up tonight at the Red Door are a sure-fire way to clear your head before this weekend's clusterfuck.
Skeleton$, whose Bus LP for Sockets is due early next year, blends woozy, deconstructed synth [...]

Arts Roundup: Exhibitionist Eye Patch Edition

Good morning! Seems like it's de rigueur these days to begin a roundup with some musing on the weather, but I'm an indoor kid.
David Quammen's patrons aren't, though, and that's the problem: The subject of my colleague Amanda Hess' column this week runs the MOCA DC gallery in Georgetown and is facing eviction—partially because a performer, [...]

Tomorrow: Buildings Open for Lightning Bolt, Guitar Orchestra in Tow

You read that headline correctly—D.C. experimental rockers Buildings have assembled a guitar orchestra for their spot tomorrow opening for Rhode Island noiseniks Lightning Bolt at DC9.
Collin Crowe, a guitarist in Buildings who organized tomorrow's orchestral project, says 15 guitars will be on stage. "I hit up mostly friends of mine for it," he says. "To [...]

Sockets Posts Showcase Recordings

Missed the Sockets Records showcase last week? Too bad. It was a pretty good time. Luckily, the label has preserved it—well, three-fourths of it—for posterity. Throughout the week, Sockets has been doling out mp3s of the soundboard tapes on its blog. Now three of the five sets—including performances by Hume, Imperial China, and Buildings–are up [...]

Buildings on All Our Noise

In honor of tonight's Sockets Records showcase, All Our Noise recently hosted a live session for space-punk trio Buildings. The band performed two songs, "Tesselations" (see above) and "Tiny Mountains," which you can find at the AON site.
