Photos: Surprise Foo Fighters Show w/ the Don’t Need Its and Trouble Funk @ 9:30 Club

Big_Tonys-cover5"This is a dream come true for me, just to see my face on one of those cardboard go-go posters," said Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl at the 9:30 Club on Monday night. On the posters, Grohl was slated to be the MC of a birthday celebration for Trouble Funk's legendary frontman Big Tony. But Grohl ended up making a lot of other people's dreams come true: The Foo Fighters played a secret show at the venue, along with the Don't Need Its, a band Grohl put together with his Scream bandmate Pete Stahl and two members of Bad Brains (Dr. Know and Darryl Jenifer) to play 45 minutes of Bad Brains and Scream songs, including a melt-your-face version of "Pay to Cum." Yes, Grohl played drums, and yes, people were losing their minds with glee.

The members of Trouble Funk, led by Big Tony, were their classy selves, making a packed floor dance to go-go beats. 9:30 Club owner Seth Hurwitz even joined the band to play drums during a rousing cover of "Play that Funky Music White Boy."

The Foo Fighters played their loudest for over two hours, which included a stint of Grohl shredding on the bar. If Hurwitz doesn't have to replace a few speakers this week, I'll be surprised.
