Photos: Courtney Love @ Fillmore

Prior to Saturday's Fillmore show, I photographed Courtney Love twice before. The first was SXSW 2010, where she announced her return with a roaring gusto, and then again a couple of months later at the now-infamous 9:30 Club show. I can report that Saturday was a repeat of SXSW 2010, and anyone who loves an underdog would have relished seeing Love come back swinging hard.

Love's voice was a bit raspy (perhaps from screaming her songs night after night), and from the start of "Miss World"—which kicked off the set—it was obvious she and her band weren't phoning anything in. For the next 45 minutes, the band hit the highlights of the Hole catalog and Love's 2010 record Nobody's Daughter, then did a 15-minute encore that included Love and lead guitarist Micko Larkin playing a lovely acoustic version of Big Star's "Thirteen." It demonstrated the fascinating duality of a woman who always lives with her heart very publicly on her sleeve.
