Photos: Paint Branch, Deathfix @ Black Whiskey Opening
Saturday night brought the opening of a new bar on 14th Street NW, Black Whiskey, but Sasha Lord was also making a debut of sorts: The local promoter, who regularly books the back room at Comet Ping Pong, recently took up booking at the new Logan Circle space.
This weekend, Black Whiskey took the form of a gallery space, concert room, bar, and restaurant, with art brought in from nearby Transformer and performances from locals Paint Branch and Deathfix. The former—John Davis' and Chris Richards' post-Q and Not U project—kicked off the night with lovely harmonies and acoustic guitars; the latter, one of D.C.'s best bands at the moment, brought a searing set of post-punk psychedelia. Ian Svenonius and Kid Congo Powers spun garage and soul on the early side and brought the house down later that night, transforming the downstairs level into a dance club. It was a strong opening that showed what could be a promising new side of Logan Circle nightlife.
