Rock Creek Social Club Does SXSW
Rock Creek Social Club always prided itself on eclecticism. At the collective's unpretentious weekly parties, you could hear the syrupy crawl of Drake’s “Cameras” as often as Backyard Band’s cover of Raphael Saadiq’s “Still Ray.” Soon enough, Wale and Common were dropping by the party, and Goodlife Tuesdays became the best worst-kept secret in D.C. But after two successful years, Rock Creek Social stopped the weekly happening last October, citing fatigue.
So the group moved on to new projects—namely, expanding its "brand" and exploring the idea of branching out to other cities. "Throwing events in other major markets is something that Rock Creek Social Club is interested in and is in the process of planning at the moment," writes group co-founder and DJ Jerome Baker III in an email. For the past two years, the group has aimed to change the way people socialize in D.C. It seems the party was simply the first phase.
Thursday, they’ll fly to Austin, Texas for the annual media scrum that is SXSW—mostly for research and networking purposes. “Rock Creek Social Club has always focused on branding. At this point, we're showing people that we're much more than just a great party by exploring other collaborative opportunities and other event ideas that we can add to our portfolio,” writes co-founder Kevin "Unkle Scooty" Hallums. Baker says that the trip will probably amount to a learning experience. “We have some amazing collaborations and experiences ready to share with the masses," he writes. "[We] want to maximize the brand’s awareness and learn from other groups who are performing and creating at the festival."
Rock Creek Social Club isn't yet done with the District, though. “I don't feel like we've conquered D.C.," Hallums writes. "I only say that because I know how huge of a market this is. We have a bit more work to do. The plan is to make sure that we are a household name." Does he regret ending Goodlife Tuesdays? Not exactly. "Goodlife was an awesome experience, but we have much more to offer," he says. "People will get to see that in the near future."
