In front of a sizable audience at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage last night, Faroese folk musician Eivør showed off the full range of her utterly unique voice, darting from snarling ferocity to high, almost saccharine sweetness. Her set drew primarily from her 2012 album Room, with a smattering of earlier pieces sung in her native Faroese, a welcome and appropriate gesture towards the theme of the Kennedy Center's Nordic Cool festival.
I first encountered Eivør as a vocalist for Kristian Blak's Yggdrasil, a jazz group that's also playing a set at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Stage this Friday. She's since branched out into a solo career drawing from folk, electronic music, and rock, though her show on Wednesday mostly showcased her folkier side. That consistency wasn't necessarily unwelcome; whatever she lacked in eclecticism, she made up for with a performance that didn't skimp on creativity.
