Photos: Meshuggah @ Fillmore Silver Spring
Meshuggah vocalist Jens Kidman was sidelined with the flu for several dates of the Swedish metal band's current U.S. tour, though the group famously played at least one show with a cardboard cutout of him onstage. He appeard back in full force on Saturday night at the Fillmore Silver Spring, leading the band through a set of the tremendously loud and fiendishly complex songs that they've made their name on. The band drew more than half of its set from its most recent release, Koloss, with a few unsurprising older cuts tossed in ("Bleed," "Catch 33").
Kidman retired from the stage early, allowing Sacha Dunable of openers Intronaut to take over vocal duties for the last song of the set. He similarly sat out the encore, a blistering instrumental version of "Dancers to a Discordant System." Disappointing for many, surely, but as it happens, Meshuggah can handle itself just fine without a vocalist.
Here's the full slideshow, including some photos of openers Animals as Leaders. (I missed Intronaut's set, unfortunately.)
