Last Friday night, a trio of folky D.C. bands played to a decently large and enthusiastic crowd at Rock & Roll Hotel, headlined by The North Country. Pree and Ballad’ve rounded out the bill with avant-folk and bluegrass sets, respectively. A pleasant surprise was the cameo by cellist Daniel Frankh, who guested with both The North Country and Ballad’ve and fit in seamlessly, in particular adding a great new layer to The North Country’s sound. (I asked The North Country’s Andrew Grossman, pictured above, whether they had played with Frankh before. His response: “Sure—-at soundcheck earlier this evening.”)
