Photos: Vector Trio @ Artomatic
Somehow, D.C. free-improv group Vector Trio has flown under my radar despite being active for the better part of a decade. Until recently, the trio—Scott Forrey on trumpet, Gary Rouzer on bass and cello, Marshall Hughey (pictured above) on drums—leaned heavily on loops and electronics, but during its 45-minute set at Artomatic Saturday, the group favored a more organic sound with little or no electronic tinkering.
For much of the set, Rouzer and especially Forrey experimented with various noisemakers, from whistles to styrofoam blocks. Perhaps my tastes are getting less adventurous, but my favorite parts of the improvisation, including much of the last 20 minutes or so, were when Forrey stuck to his trumpet and Rouzer to his cello, and the group improvised around easily recognizable themes. Regardless, the whole set was enjoyable and fit comfortably into the anything-goes Artomatic spirit.
