Chuck Brown’s Public Viewing Is Today

This is the week D.C. says goodbye to the Godfather of Go-Go. If you're planning to pay respects to Chuck Brown—whose remains can be viewed today at the Howard Theatre—here's how it'll work.

Today's public viewing takes place today from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 620 T St. NW. Expect big crowds; the folks at the Howard don’t know whether they’ll see 1,000 or 30,000. The line will be manned by the Metropolitan Police Department, and it will stretch down T Street NW and onto 7th. According to the Associated Press, the stretch of T Street near the theater will be closed to cars. After morning rush hour, 7th and 8th streets between Florida Avenue and S Street will be closed, as well.

The city recommends using public transportation to get to the viewing. We agree. Take the Green Line to Shaw or a Metrobus along 7th Street or Florida Avenue. If you drive, limited public parking will be available at Howard Center (2224 Georgia Ave.), East Towers Lot (2200 8th St.), and Banneker South (2345 Sherman Ave.).

No photography is allowed, probably because taking a picture of Chuck Brown’s body would be both disrespectful and creepy.

A memorial service will be held noon to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

Is proper to refer to his body, lying in repose, as "remains"? It's not a crime or accident scene...
