As DJ J-Scrilla sees it, the DMV doesn’t have a dedicated concert series for local rappers. Sure, there’s a handful of open mics where MCs can rock a song or two—-and last year, SmCity‘s Indie Life Concert Series allowed local rappers to share the stage with national talent—-but there’s no regular platform for them to perform a full set. “I wanted to get something where fans of the culture could witness a real hip-hop show in the DMV,” Scrilla says.

That’s why Scrilla is launching the monthly VMD Concert series, with its inaugural show happening Monday night at Club One in Alexandria, Va. Scrilla decided to flip the “DMV” acronym as a way to shed light on Virginia’s underlooked rap scene; the first four VMD concerts will be held there.

Rappers Lyriciss, Sean Born, Tese Fever, Boobe, Born Unique, and Illa Ghee are on the bill. Tickets are $10. Club One is located at 8786 Richmond Highway. As a bonus, Scrilla just dropped the second installment of his Capitol Punishment mixtape series, which includes repurposed songs from the aforementioned rappers.
