2012 Wammies Winners: Slightly Less Snoozy!

Yoko KThe winners of the 26th annual Wammies have been announced. And with that, I return to my nap.

But wait! Maybe not just yet. It looks like a couple of categories in the typically snoozy Washington Area Music Awards have undergone much-needed shock therapy. For one, arts-establishment darling Yoko K. (pictured) has stolen "Electronica Artist" from the cashmere-gloved grip of Thievery Corporation. In the DJ category, Jesse Tittsworth and relative newcomer DJ Jackie O. have swooped in and nabbed the prize, leaving perennial winners Bob Mould and Rich Morel, well, probably not giving a crap, but kudos to them anyway.

In the modern-rock categories, more indie-rock groups (More Humans, Office of Future Plans, US Royalty) were nominated, but none won; overall, singer/songwriter Jon Carroll is the big winner, taking home an award for best pop rock instrumentalist (again), musician of the year (again), and songwriter of the year. It's nice to see Afro Blue walk away with best a capella group, best video (for "Nature Boy"), and the spotlight award—that ensemble put in a heap of work last yearChristylez Bacon won best rapper over Fat Trel, Kokayi, Tabi Bonney, and several other big talents; meanwhile, Wale's mixtape The Eleven One Eleven Theory won best hip-hop recording, while his actual LP (Ambition) didn't even garner a nomination.

Who knows, maybe there are even more surprises. View all this year's winners on the WAMA website.

The best performance came at the end of the night by an up and coming band called "Westmain". Their song "Sirens" was up for the song of the year award. I wouldn't be shocked to see them on the big stage in the near future. Very Talented and Energetic.

I was really hoping for Maimouna Youssef to win for best R&B vocalist-she is pure raw talent and her latest album The Blooming was outstanding.

Of course, I have more opinions on the Wammies, which can be found on D.C. Music Download's website

you missed the best one of the night - GODISHEUS won for the second year in a row under the best rap/hip-hop group category... this band is full of the best veteran local musicians - fronted by the Mayor of DC Hip-Hop Head-Roc, with Dwayne Lee of Faces you Know on Guitar and Kenny Kwick of Chuck Brown on drums.

The WAMMIES suck. It's a clique of maybe 20 that give the impression that they actually represent the DC metro area. Please. *rolls eyes*
