Poor But Sexy Is Part of Our Plot to Meddle With Rappers

We're always lookin' for ways to help Wale get his karma straight, because The Man From Waldorf should not be expected to handle it all himself. Shit's too complicated these days. Here's how he can shake the lingering weirdness of getting his big break from a British R&B outsider: He can record some stuff with Poor But Sexy, a group of D.C. R&B outsiders. Check out these freebies from the band's full-length debut album, Let's Move in Together, which came out last week:

A Ronson-schooled MC could drop right in there, right?

In case you care, Poor But Sexy's lineup is: singer David Brown, bassist Brandon Kalber (both from Travis Morrison's Hellfighters), guitarist/producer Jason Caddell (The Dismemberment Plan), keyboardist David Durst (Anti-Social Music) and drummer Bruce Falconer (a journo and City Paper beer writer). If they were to team up with Wale (again, this is about karma, not lucre), the blueprint could be the Brand New Heavies' 1992 plunge into hip-hop, Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1, which yielded these Grand Puba, Masta Ace and Main Source collaborations:

Hell, they could extend the project to all of Wale's Board Administration crew. Fat Trel could wear a shirt.

NOTE TO DAVID BROWN: None of this is intended to imply that you suck as a singer. If you take the Brand New Heavies metaphor to its logical conclusion, then Let's Move in Together is your Brother Sister. And that means you are N'Dea Davenport.

(Poor But Sexy opens for David Dondero and Franz Nicolay on Feb. 27 at the Black Cat.)
