Is DC9 Doomed?

That is to say: If you were in charge of the venue's brand, what would you tell the owners? Even if the five men charged with aggravated assault following the death of 27-year-old Ali Ahmed Mohammed—DC9 co-owner Bill Spieler and four employees of the club—are exonerated, the damage to the venue's reputation may still be permanent. An ad man would probably tell the venue to find a new name.

At the very least, the venue doesn't seem to want to tempt any ire: Even before the venue saw its liquor license suspended today, it canceled most of its shows through Nov. 3; others have moved to the 400-capacity Rock & Roll Hotel. The more comfortable fit would've been the new Red Palace, which has the same capacity as DC9, around 200. But the Red Palace also had to cancel its shows for the next few weeks because of licensing issues. That left some artists this past weekend, like the art-rock provocateurs Xiu Xiu, scrambling for a new venue (the group settled on a DIY space).

DC9, Red Palace, and Rock & Roll Hotel share some owners, and the group has to be hurting financially from the week's events. Another casualty? Newspaper ad revenues. The other side of Washington City Paper's building tells me that the usual half-page ad for DC9 has been pulled this week.

    "Another casualty"? Yikes, dude.

  • http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com Jonathan L. Fischer

Err, yeah. Definitely wrong choice of words.

  • dcobserver

    Poor DC 9...casualty indeed.

  • Rick

Who cares what they call it!!!! They are murders!! It is sad!!!!! Someone actually cares what the damn place going to be named afterward??

  • Scoobs

What a whirlwind....murder? No one can cry "murder" until the facts come out. Someone died, yes - but why?? No one can say at this point can they?

  • MissV

I would never go to DC9 again. Their co-owner and employees are party to an alleged egregious crime. A man has died in what- the name of vandalism? Alleged or not, I will never entertain the idea of giving my hardworking money to a business that employs people with no comprehension of human life.

No business should be allowed to kill.

    Boycott DC9.

  • Future

MURDER charges for all 5 THUGS! rot in jail!

and to Jonathan L. Fischer you should be ASHAMED of yourself! worrying about FINANCE, MONEY, ALCOHOL LICENCE, and PERFORMANCE VENUES while a young man lost his life beaten by 5 thugs!

    outrageous

  • Outraged

I AM friends with a few of the people, who, in their own way, manage this brand. I HAVE been in the room where (not the owner Bill) but other employees have been allowed to do some crazy things after hours. In the alleys they smoke pot and whatever else most of the time in this area. I am DONE with this bar scene. All of the people defending it KNOW that there are a select group of people who are OUT of control and black out drunk most of the time. Good people get drunk and do STUPID, insane, excessive things. But it's time to look in the mirror - if these men had accidentally hit somebody with a car, drunk, then called 911, what would you do? Say it's not their fault? When the video tapes, the 911 tape, and the coronor's report come out -- along with people who ARE NOT drinking on the job who witnessed it -- what will you do then? You think this is an episode of your court TV shows - it's not. This IS real. Join AA or do some good for the community. Or, you too, will be a part of the crime TV documentary in 5 years. This is about to be a media explosion, and you're all posting "STARS AND BARS FOREVER" -- we support DC9 on FaceBook? It makes me sick. Your whole crowd is as bad as the bullies as of late ---- taunting the dead man and blaming him for his own murder. Shame on you. Your parents must be awfully proud of that -- and the blow up your nose.

  • Nate

Every single time I read comments on the internet, I fear for the future of humanity.

  • Jezebel

People are seriously sick. I refuse to step anywhere near that damned place. My prayers and thoughts are out to the family.

  • noodlez

AHH EXCUSE ME MR FISCHER NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT DC9 AND ITS REBRANDING!

FOR YOU TO POST THIS WACK ASS SHIT AN HOUR BEFORE THE VIGIL IS PURELY DISRESPECTFUL. FUCK DC9! IT WILL NEVER OPEN ITS DOORS AGAIN ESPECIALLY AT 1940 9TH ST NW.

YOU WHINING IN THE ETHER ABOUT WCP AD DOLLARS DOES NOTHING FOR THE AD MONEY YOU WILL LOSE BECAUSE OF THOSE DUMBASSES.

  • Steve

Seriously a sick and disgusting article. Have some respect for a dead man and stop talking shit about money and whether DC9 will be back in businesses. The owner and his gang of thugs should go to jail forever and you should lose your City Paper writing privileges. I really think your "Another casualty" reference is so in poor taste its not even funny. I can see you winking to your editor/writer friends as to how funny it is to refer to a "casualty". Sicko.

  • Diedre

The fact is simple. A property damage does not call for a death penalty. And have any of us considered how this elevated to someone throwing a brick through a window and then running. The man was running away. He was not fighting but rather flighting. The five of the DC9 should figure out what they plan to do with their time in the federal prison system because that is where they are headed. Personally I hope that when the charges are amended and changed back to second degree murder that they are held without bond. The victim did not get to plan for his life being taken away and wiped away without planning and neither should theirs. I am not a clubby type person but I do know that having lived a block away I was happy when I moved from the area because it is nothing but drunken chaos and substance abusers that justify their bad behavior. I think it is time for everyone to grow up and take responsibility for their behavior.

  • Hannibal

Mr. Fisher, you are a pig, and your mentality is similar to that of the murderers. You worry much about money, rather than human life. In this country, a damaged window does not warrant a murder.

  • http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com Jonathan L. Fischer

    Everyone, thanks for commenting.

I didn't mean for the post to seem callous, and if it does, that doesn't reflect how I feel. Ali Ahmed Mohammed's death is a tragedy, and I think our coverage has reflected that. One of my colleagues attended the vigil last night, as well.

This is an arts blog, and my point here was to figure out what this means for the people who own DC9 and other clubs -- not all of them were involved in last Friday morning's events. People are angry, understandably, and that won't make reopening the club easy.

  • h4pr

DC9 had been overrun by douchebags and the bridge and tunnel crowd who were never wanted there in the first place. Judging from all of the apoplectic faux outrage over the incident, and the kneejerk boycott threats, I get the feeling the place is about to get a lot cooler.

I'm looking forward to the re-opening, and never having to drink in the same bar with you idiots ever again.

  • Pedantic MFr

No one actually from DC would use the term "bridge and tunnel crowd". Go back to Jersey, douchebag. You were never wanted there in the first place. (Did you see what I did there? Huh? Huh?)

  • h4pr

Your failed attempt to out-DC a native who was born and raised here doesn't change the fact that nobody wants a bunch of hysteria-mongers around.

The kid didn't deserve to be beaten to death for doing a stupid thing. But if you can't sympathize with the owner and the employees defending their place, you probably don't belong in a punk rock bar.

  • osmp

why would you sympathize with the very people that have caused a man to loose his life? as if they deserve a thought of concern for their poor "punk rock bar" when they obviously didn't care while they were beating ali's skull in. you are the perfect example of ignorant trash. dc has reached it's capacity of losers with a bar tab.

  • JP

Everyone needs to chill on the reporter that wrote absolutely nothing inflamatory at all. It's just another angle of the story. "Faux outrage." Well said, h4pr.

  • h4pr

    osmp-

Let's make one thing abundantly clear here. There is exactly one person who caused Ali Ahmed Mohammed to lose his life. And that person's name is Ali Ahmed Mohammed. If the idiot doesn't throw a rock through the window, none of this ever happens. Although it doesn't warrant a death sentence, that doesn't change the fact that it was a mean, violent, hateful, stupid thing to do.

  • Fuck DC9

fuck DC9. Fuck those murderers. fuck steve lambert. fuck that poor drunken son of a bitch for throwing that rock and pissing those hooligans off. fuck jaegermeister. fuck barbara walters. fuck sesame street. fuck pizza. fuck punk-rock. fuck plain bagels. fuck busses. fuck salmon. fuck clouds. fuck dee snyder.

fuck newspapers and their half-assed attempt at an "angle". fuck DC9, rock and roll blow-tell, and the red fallace.

  • Justice

h4pr you're such an idiot. you claim Ali Mohammed beat himself to death? your a dumbass seriously you need to take medication and a dose of reality.

Everyone knows those 5 vigilanties beat him to death. soon when the autopsy report comes out, they will be looking at LONG and HARD time. Its a good thing they're gay, so they can make boyfriends easily in federal "pound you in the ass" prison :)

  • Who gives a s*^% about DC9

Who cares about a club full of DRUGGED UP, COKED UP, DRUNK, GAY, and RACIST FAGGOT ASS EMPLOYEES AND OWNERS?

they already lost their liquor licence.

I for one will lose no sleep over the closing of this bar.

  • h4pr

    Everyone knows.

Everyone knows that spelling is overrated.

Everyone knows that punctuation is superfluous.

Everyone knows that taking responsibility for your own actions is outdated.

Everyone knows that gay bashing makes you sound confident and well-informed.

Everyone knows that smiley faces make everything okay.

Everyone knows that Ali Ahmed Mohammed is a victim.

    Everyone knows.

  • 25-to-Life

Everyone knows 5 killers beat Ali Mohammed to death.

Everyone knows 2nd degree murder charges are comming back.

    keep defending the dc9killers

They will certainly go to jail. They took the matter into their own hands and they will have to deal with the consequences. I never suggested they were innocent, nor did I claim they shouldn't go to jail. Did you catch that part? Or were you too busy jumping to conclusions?

But feel free to go on defending someone who brought this on himself.

When a drunk driver wraps his car around a tree, do you blame the tree?

  • vigilante justice

    "brought this on himself"

so according to you, property damage should be punishable by death.

hey why don't you volunteer for the KKK while you're at it?

  • tarma

Mr. Fisher, consider writing something about the fuming resentment against the thriving Ethiopian businesses in the area. I was at the vigil last night and disappointed to witness a sign that reads” We support DC 9"on the windows of some American businesses.
Now, that is no consideration for the dead—at all. You see what I am saying? There is no question these men didn’t intend to kill, but they did. So, no need to cover up a wrong doing, this man may be a Muslim African American immigrant but he shares a common denominator with most of us, a human being. We need objectivity from your part—you carry a huge responsibility as a newsman to do so. I have trust in you (City Paper).

  • Questions about the ME process

Hey, could the city paper do anything on explaining the medical examination process? there's been a lot of confusion about how long it takes, how it gets done, what the official conclusions typically address, etc.?

  • Tony

How we are safe in DC if we see this kind of thing again and again. I know Bill will be free since he know most of corrupted leaders. What a sad!

  • No answers

sorry "Questions about the ME process" but Jonathan L. Fischer is too worried about dollars and cents rather then about the death of a young man brutally beaten by 5 employees who think they can game the dc justice system.

  • jck

"When a drunk driver wraps his car around a tree, do you blame the tree?"

No, but if someone shot the driver for damaging the tree, I wouldn't blame the driver for getting shot.

  • ram

Thanks, Jonathan. Personally, I'm suspend judgement about the circumstances around Mr. Mohammed's death until after I hear whether charges are being levied, and following that, a verdict. I believe that none of that is your job to write on, so I'll be looking for other reports about that.

In the mean time, *I* do want to know what's going on with respect to our local music scene, including the fallout resulting from the suspended operations of DC9. There are bands that are slated to come to town to play gigs, and I need to know if their gigs are still on, and where. So, thanks for continuing to do that, which *IS* your job.

Lastly, as an FYI, Pedantic MFr, I was born, grew up, and still live, in DC, and I use "bridge-and-tunnel crowd" all the time. My friends do, too. No other term describes the crowds that commute into DC to work & play quite as effectively.

  • NiggaPlz

"That is to say: If you were in charge of the venue’s brand, what would you tell the owners...an ad man would probably tell the venue to find a new name."

Have you not been able to figure out that patrons of DC9 are largely unconcerned about what happened? If anything, they are sympathetic toward DC9, understanding what it is like operating in a shithole like Shaw.

"DC9, Red Palace, and Rock & Roll Hotel share some owners, and the group has to be hurting financially from the week’s events."

Are you fucking kidding? Do you even KNOW the owners of these businesses? They could shutter all of their organizations and survive. They worry more for their bartenders, barbacks, servers, etc.

"Another casualty? Newspaper ad revenues. The other side of Washington City Paper’s building tells me that the usual half-page ad for DC9 has been pulled this week."

I am starting to think maybe you are dyslexic (not in the backwards reading sense but in the backwards thinking sense). If DC9 has cancelled its shows through early November, why would they spend money on advertising?

  • NiggaPlease

"I was born, grew up, and still live, in DC, and I use “bridge-and-tunnel crowd” all the time. My friends do, too. No other term describes the crowds that commute into DC to work & play quite as effectively."

I call bullshit on you too. Nobody uses that term here, period. Especially when we don't have a tunnel into the District. And nobody that was actually born/raised in the District actually vocalizes it, particularly on blogs.

  • IHateAllofYou

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel on 66 E around Rosslyn and then across the GW bridge.

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel on 9th St.

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel on 12th St.

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel on 66 E around Rosslyn and then across the GW bridge.

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel on 9th St.

Remind me again that there are no tunnels into DC the next time I drive through the tunnel to Mass Ave from 395.

    Idiot.

  • Tunnel Fever

Actually, all of those tunnels are either completely within DC or completely in DC, including the tunnel from 395, which originates in the District. So yes, there are no tunnels "into" DC...

  • Tunnel Fever

oops, either completely within DC or completely within Virginia...

  • Brick Chucker

I think they should rename it "Ali's Brickhouse" and have a 5 for 1 drink special everynight.

  • DC9Killers

5 to 1 beat down???? how savage. Life in prison is where these vigilantes are going.
