Tonight: Kompakt DJ/Producer Michael Mayer at U Street Music Hall
The 38-year-old German DJ Michael Mayer, who will be spinning and mixing music at the U. Street Music Hall tonight, is not just another techno artist. Mayer is one of the founders of Kompakt, a Cologne-based label, record store, distributor, and more, as well as a go-to source for many aficionados of programmed, stripped-down club music. Mayer's been well-known in Europe since the late '90s, but he became an international name with the atmospheric, minimal techno approach he smoothly concocted on his 2002 Immer mix CD and his 2003 Fabric 13 effort. While both feature an insistent, thumping beat, Mayer’s microhouse makes that pulse feel slightly less flashy and dominant thanks in part to his stylish weaving of electro-spacey effects, orchestral strings, and occasional vocal samples into the blend. Since then he's released his own album, Touch, and remixed acts like Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys. Touring in anticipation of the June release Immer 3, Mayer can be expected to take full advantage of the UHall’s highly touted sound system.
Michael Mayer with Output Message and Brian Billion at 9 p.m. Tuesday May 25 at the U. Street Music Hall, 1115 U. St. NW. (202) 588-1880. $10 (or free with RSVP on Facebook).
