Around the World in a Weekend: Local International Music Events
This is a busy weekend for international sounds. Here are some recommendations.
Saturday
WPFW DJ Jim Byers leads a panel discussion on the history of D.C. Latin-music clubs with music from Bio Ritmo from 2 to 4 p.m. for free at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, 1901 Fort Place SE.
The 13th Annual D.C. Reggae Awards will be given out between 9:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., with live music from the likes of the Oasis Reggae Band, special guests Etalian & Spaniards, and Earthquake. The Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational 2010—at 7:30 p.m. at George Washington’s Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St. NW—is a dance competition between North American squads including Nachdi Jawani (Toronto), Anakh-E-Gabroo (New York), VCU Bhangra (Richmond), PANJ (Surrey, B.C.), Duniya Allstars (Surrey, B.C.); Bhangra Empire (San Jose, Calif.), and
LBC (Livingston, Calif.).
Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy: Masters of the Celtic Fiddle at 8 p.m. at the George Mason Center for the Arts, 4400 University Drive in Fairfax.
Cynthia Oliver/COCo Dance Theater present "Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso" at Dance Place , 3225 8th St. NE DC (and on Sunday). This is an evening-length multidisciplinary dance-theater project on the nature of calypso dancing as an agent of Afro-Anglo Caribbean identity .

Masters of Persian Music with Kayhan Kalhor on kamancheh, Hossein Alizadeh on tar, and young vocalist Hamid Reza Nourbakhsh, leading disciple of the renowned Mohammad Reza Shajarian, at 8 p.m. at the Kennedy Center, 2700 F. St. NW.
