This always feels like the "John or Paul" question, needing to chose some allegiance between Tweedy and Farrar. I've finally grown tired and bored with Wilco. Ground I thought I had compeltely covered with Son Volt both during the Sebastapol days and again folling the Search.
If this album had one good rocker, critics might be hailing this as the decade's Trace but you know, I'm o.k. without it. This album has been in mostly constant rotation on my iPod since July 7th and it's defnitely a grower. These are really good songs and individually or collectively, they stand up well to the early catalog.
One other comment I'd like to make and it begins with the song "Exiles". My constant complaint with early Son Volt is that each record petered out - even Trace. ACD remains solid througout and for that, I'm thankful.

Well said. Jay, through Son Volt, has been somewhat experimental musically and instrumentally, lyrically, he has evolved more naturally. And, while I have appreciated the experimentation, the American Central Dust sound seems to fit the lyrics a little better, IMO.

I couldn't agree more with Steve's review. I really like Son Volt's new album as well as Wilco's. They are very different bands but both make great music.
