Tonight: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings at the 9:30 Club

Whatever you might want to say about Sharon Jones, don’t call her a member of “Amy Winehouse’s backing band.” And please, don’t call that “backing band” the “Dap Tones”–they’re the Dap-Kings, for Christ’s sake.

In his City Lights pick for tonight, Ted Scheinman argues that the Dap-Kings may be the only men in the music world who can keep up with the mighty Jones: “In songs like “How Do I Let a Good Man Down” and “Your Thing Is a Drag,” [Jones] renounces the various guys who can’t amuse her, outdrink her, or get her off. She’s too much woman for them, and small wonder, since her story is even more hardboiled than her persona.”

Read the entire (mighty) pick for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

Show deets: SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS PERFORM WITH NAOMI SHELTON & THE GOSPEL QUEENS ON FRI., MAY 8, AT 8 P.M. AND ON SAT., MAY 9, AT 6:30 P.M. AT THE 9:30 CLUB, $30. (202) 265-0930.
