Bring It On

Waaaaay back in 2002, some of the city’s finest rappers assembled to recreate A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory, from the nasty opening bassline of “Excursions” all the way through the final echo of “Scenario.” It was one of the best hip-hop moments D.C has seen, and if you didn’t catch it (or didn’t at least watch one of the widely circulated recordings of the show), you really missed out.

But now hip-hop fans who missed that historic night can stop kicking themselves, as an event with the potential to be just as amazing is coming up.

Some of the DMV’s finest MCs and producers are once again assembling to pay tribute to a classic hip-hop album: this time, it’s Jay-Z’s 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt.

Asheru, Ken Starr, Head Roc, X.O., and many, many others will remix Hov’s finest album (yes, this is inarguably his best, so keep your feelings about The Blueprint and In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 to yourself, please). The event (which is being held at Expo, 1928 9th St., NW) isn’t until the end of the month, but in the week’s leading up to the show, Black Plastic Bag will talk to the organizers, lyricists, and producers participating in the concert about their attachment to this seminal hip-hop work.
