I went to the show in Baltimore. It sounded similar to your write up about the DC show and I seem to be one of the disappointed many. I paid $81 for 2 tickets and after a few red bulls the night cost over a $100 and I don't even drink. Speaking backstage and teasing the crowd was lame. Come out and blow the fucking roof off. He was just plain and boring. I left after 30-40 minutes after feeling like catching a good night sleep was more important. For what he's making and charging for a show I expect to be entertained. He just never got the crowd really going. Come out with a band or something. Another overrated MC in my opinion, at least live.. and oh yea...the opener was dreadful and made me want to burn all my fitted hats. I try not to be a hater but today's music needs a spiritual revolution.

I came with the same lofty expectations. I too was introduced to Mos through "Black on Both Sides" and Black Star Movement wanted to feel the same way when I heard 'Love' come through the speakers... if even half that crowd felt the same way I did when we heard how late he was, I can understand why some people booed.

I thought the show was amazing and I think its worth noting that he didn't do an awkward number from the New Danger... he did Fake Bonanza, which is a really tight track. Was it awkward for the reviewer because he didn't do the expected thing or was it awkward because the reviewer didn't know the song? Hmmm...

There was a moment where someone booed him to the point that he addressed her with the simple words "You won't stop me from doing my job up here. I'm a grown man." That really stuck with me. I think as his music grows up, he'll lose some of these fans. I'm happy that I grew with him.

"Glorified sound-check" is exactly what it was. And a real shame too, since I know he can and has done better. Sorry to hear that he 2nd set was just as poor...

Exactly VNL! session two was a weird version of a sound check too with two of the whackest spinners around and a sound system worse than the JVC boom box I had in college. and, the saddest part is that i went with my 60 year old dad whose been dying to see Mos since he introduced the band Black Jack Johnson on HBO. while it was good bonding for dad and i, i wanted to punch Mos for giving my dad, the greatest music lover of all time, the worse concert experience of his life.

I agree with Adam's comment from above about it seeming like there was too much starting and stopping. The entire performance never seemed to hit a stride.

I went to the first show, so after a 3-hour wait (albeit not out in the cold), I, along with many others, had become pretty salty and expected Mos to come out and kill it for us. He basically treated the first show as his sound check and fumbled through songs. It seemed completely unrehearsed as we saw a lot of Mos' back to us, constantly giving his DJs (why 2?) instruction. Not sure how much of that was the sound issues or his vision for the format of the show, but by this review of the show, it seems that it was the latter.

Not sure if I'll go see Mos the next time around. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk the triffling performance up to the delayed flight throwing his night off, but I didn't see much potential for that show to be that much better anyway. We wanted more of Mos the emcee, not Mos the stand up comic or Mos the hype man.
