There are three things that ever since I can remember have been widely discussed and speculated upon, none of which I ever really imagined would come to pass—at least, not in my lifetime.

  1. The Boston Red Sox would win the World Series.
  2. A black man would be elected President of the United States.
  3. Guns N’ Roses would release Chinese Democracy.

Two of these things have come to pass. But really, did anybody think we’d ever see Chinese Democracy?

And yet, what may be the most-delayed new release of all time and is almost certainly the most expensive ($13 million was the figure given by the New York Times — and that was three and a half years ago) has a street date less than two weeks away, exclusively through Best Buy. Such promises have been made before, of course…but this is the first time I know of that the powers-that-be were so confident, they aired TV spots advertising the record’s release:
