Arts Desk: News and Criticism on D.C. and Beyond

All Eyes on Twitty

Cultural superblog Boing Boing yesterday linked to a 1990 video featuring country superstar Conway Twitty and avant-garde weirdos The Residents performing together (not such an unusual combo, considering Twitty was from northern Mississippi and the Residents were from northern Louisiana) on David Sanborn’s innovative, but under-watched Night Music. As it happens, the Eye Guys are the focus of several years’ research by yours truly.

The Residents are the ones wearing the full-body versions of their usual headgear, three eyeballs and a skull–these particular versions were designed for their 1989-90 stage show “Cube-E: A History of American Music in 3 EZ Pieces,” one of their genuine masterpieces–alas, their world tour never made it to D.C.

While there’s no mention of it on Boing Boing, it’s a particularly timely posting: on Wednesday, the Residents announced that in the fall they’ll commence their first tour in five years, as part of their new Bunny Boy project. The current list of venues contains no D.C. dates, but also cautions that some promoters have asked them to hold back on the show announcement. So check back.
