Tonight’s Pick: Black Angels at the Rock and Roll Hotel

No parents want their kid to grow up to be a member of the Black Angels. It’s hard to think you did right by a child when he’s up there on that stage in a Nico T-shirt, eyes glazing over as he holds down a single note on a keyboard for 20 minutes at a stretch. Young man, will your psych-rock band still feed you when you’re 45? Will being friends with Brian Jonestown Massacre still be cool when you’re the chimichanga man at Chevy’s? But it’s hard not to love the Black Angels anyway. You almost wish you were the one up there, playing those cold droning guitar riffs, skewing the Velvet Underground’s stoned minimalism into the dusty realms of Texas death-rock. It’s not a life anyone would want for their kid—in a few years the band will have gone the way of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club—but it’s great while it lasts. The Black Angels perform with the Warlocks at 8:30 p.m. at the Rock and Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $14. (202) 388-7625. —Aaron Leitko
