Soul Jazz at Twins

Anybody who enjoys those old Booker T. and the MG’s records, or perhaps Don Byron’s Do the Boomerang Album of about a year ago, will be in groove heaven tonight and tomorrow at Twins Jazz.

The featured act, for two sets (9 and 11 p.m.) on both nights, is CC Booker III, a band led by acclaimed Atlanta saxman Will Scruggs and Brooklyn organist Nate Shaw. They claim to work under three influences — Ray Charles, King Curtis, and Booker T. — all of whom are known primarily as soul-music pioneers, but all of whom have more eclectic resumes (Charles and Curtis were jazzmen, first and foremost, and Booker T. went on to trade in funk, film music, and the Philadelphia sound).

CC Booker III are apparently as interested in the trifecta’s difference as their common ground, and that promises music that’s as much fun for listening as it is for doing the boogaloo.
